As winter approaches, you are probably planning some good books and television shows to binge watch while you wait out the cold months. Unfortunately, humans are not the only living creatures looking to stay warm and comfortable during the winter months. Keep reading to learn more about ways to keep cockroaches from coming inside this winter.
Keep Food Well Stored
Like all pests, cockroaches are in search of food sources, as well as water and a warm place to nest. Your home can provide all of these essentials but it doesn’t have to. A good way to deter cockroaches is to keep all food properly stored. This means that all food is put away after a meal and nothing is left out on the counter. It also includes keeping all pet food properly stored as well.
Seal All Gaps
Any small opening into your home is a way for cockroaches to come inside. This is why it is imperative to go around your home in search of any holes, gaps or other signs of damage. These things need to be addressed and repaired before the winter as a barrier from keeping unwanted creatures outside.
Keep Things Clean
Cockroaches are attracted to grease, spills, crumbs and other messes. Food attracts them, as well as crumbs or spills left behind from eating a meal or a snack. This is why it is important to make sure to clean up after yourself after eating. Clean out the cupboards every now and then to make sure they are free of crumbs and other debris. Sweep out the pantry as well. Sweep and wash your kitchen floor at least once a week. It is also wise to keep your home as clutter-free as possible, as cockroaches love to find piles to hide in.
Keep Your Home Cool and Dry
As mentioned earlier, cockroaches are in search of a warm place to nest. They appreciate staying warm and prefer damp environments as well. Keeping your home cool and dry will deter them from wanting to stay inside your home. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you need to keep your air conditioner on during the winter. But instead, don’t raise the heat too high. Keep dehumidifiers running if needed to keep a low humidity within the home, especially in consistently damp areas such as the bathroom or basement.
